I don’t think I could tell you exactly when I decided that I was going to hike the PCT. In fact, I can’t even remember when I first heard of the trail. I had always said to my best friend “once you’re out of school we’ll hike the PCT together.” But there was a day that I remember when I realized that the dream of hiking from Mexico to Canada was mine, and that his was actually rock climbing, and that I was going to hike the trail even without him and no matter what.
So by the time he told me that he couldn’t not rock climb for six months I had already made a spreadsheet of gear weights, planned my start date and ordered Yogi’s PCT Handbook.
While musing about the trail, I’ve graduated with a Fine Arts degree and worked as a barista in Portland, OR where I’ve been able to take advantage of the Pacific Northwest’s amazing outdoor resources. I don’t know any other place in the world where you can find snowshoeing, beach walking, 12,000 ft. peaks, and lush green forests all about an hour from town. Needless to say, I spend a majority of my time-off outside and I can’t complain one bit.
So now here we are – PCT 2014 is finally around the corner and I’m gearing up (literally) for, what will undoubtedly be, quite the adventure.
